Commonwealth Books is pleased to announce its first collection of "Stories for Young Readers."

Our Stories about the American Revolution will follow the War for American Independence from the siege of Boston, which began on 20 April 1775, to the siege of Yorktown and General Cornwallis's surrender on 19 October 1781.

Our narrator is Captain William MacKay. As a younger man, Captain MacKay served on General George Washington's staff. Now retired, he at last has time to compile the reports he prepared for General Washington into collections for the benefit of his grandchildren.

We have taken the liberty to add illustrations and maps so today's readers, young and old, can see the history as they saw may have seen it.

This is what he tells them in the opening pages of his first collection:

Book 4: Campagining in the Carolinas

In real life, William MacKay is James M. Bayne. Mr. Bayne’s riveting stories convey more than historic drama. In the course of telling his fascinating tales, Bayne captures the qualities of character that allowed the often-outgunned Americans to prevail. Through the noise and confusion of clashing armies, young readers will discern the virtues of men and women who dared their lives and fortunes to win the precious right of self-determination and they will learn that this victory changed the world.

Dear William and Mary,

Here is the first collection of stories I promised you.  I am gathering them together so you can know how our country won its political Independence and how we achieved our proper place as a free and sovereign people. This is the greatest gift a parent can give his children. You must be careful to protect it so you can give it to yours.

Your loving Grandfather,

William MacKay
